Full-Scale Tests on Tapered and Curved Glulam Beams
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 101, Issue 12
Abstract
A series of full-scale tests, designed to evaluate the available theoretical analyses, were conducted on double-tapered, pitched, and curved glulam beam members. The Douglas-fir beams, each with a span of 30 ft, varied in pitch from 2 in 12 to 5 in 12. Each beam was instrumented for strain and deflection measurements and tested under working loads. In addition, load tests were conducted to beam failure, which occurred in radial tension stress for the beams that were not reinforced. Test results generally confirm the currently used theory for evaluation of radial tension stress. Suggestions for altering current design procedures are examined.
