Computer Analysis of Segmentally Erected Bridges

Abstract
Prestressed box girder bridges erected by segmental cantilevering must be designed and analyzed for the conditions existing at each stage of erection. A computer oriented analysis technique for the determination of erection stresses and displacements of such bridge structures is presented. The box girder is analytically modeled as an assemblage of rectangular finite elements. Forces due to prestressing are modeled by use of an equivalent load concept wherein large tendon slopes are taken into consideration. The principle of superposition is utilized to account for the effects of stage erection. Selected results from the computer analysis of the first precast segmentally erected prestressed box girder bridge to be constructed in the United States are presented. Application of the analysis technique to this example demonstrates the practical applicability of the analysis.
