New Concepts–Byproducts of Computer Technology
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 101, Issue 4
Abstract
The relationship of the growth of computer technology and the creation of new concepts in engineering, particularly structural engineering, is presented in this paper. Three examples of major structural innovations (100-story John Hancock Center; small roof structure for Baxter Laboratories, Deerfield, Ill., and 110-story Sears Tower) are used to illustrate this continuous relationship. It is noted that the future of new concepts will depend on how fast the computer technology moves foward.
