Inelastic Behavior of Wood Beam-Columns
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 101, Issue 2
Abstract
The pattern of stress distribution at failure in the critical cross-sectional area is mathmatically formulated on the basis of the actual stress-strain diagrams. The validity of the theoretical method is verified by a test program using 15 models. The test results agreed favorably with the theoretical prediction; the actual ultimate load closely coincides with that obtained by the theory presented. Wood beams of any species can be computed by this theory if the mathematical equation for the stress-strain diagram is known. The theory was verified through tests on glue-laminated beams using wood of the best commercial quality. This theory is of significant practical value since it makes it possible to compute the ultimate load for the bending moment and axial force or to design the interaction curve for P and M necessary to achieve a fully plastic condition in rectangular cross sections of glue-laminated wood structures (e.g., arches, frames).
