Abstract
A survey of brick masonry shells, their historical evolution, current use, and cost is provided to assist structural engineers in the rediscovery of this time honored architectural idiom. Information is provided on arches in which vaults, domes, and other shells had their origin. The development and current use of reinforced brick masonry is surveyed. A method for determining preliminary cost estimates of brick masonry shells is presented.
