Abstract

The report consists of a text and a supporting bibliography. For each subdivision of the text there is a corresponding, self-contained section in the bibliography. The report presents the current (1973) state-of-the-art so the bibliography is generally limited to recent references. For earlier references the reader is referred to Viest's 1960 review of research on composite beams, to Stevens' 1965 study of encased columns and to Gardner and Jacobson's 1967 paper on concrete filled steel tubes. The report includes the following sections: strength of shear connectors in normal and lightweight concrete; composite beams and girders with a homogeneous steel I cross section and a solid cast-in-place slab; other types of composite beams and girders; concrete encased steel beams; composite slabs, plates, and shells; beam-to-column and beam-to-girder connections; steel-concrete composite columns; composite buildings; composite bridges; and concluding remarks.
