Design Aids for Beams with Circular Eccentric Web Holes

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 100, Issue 2

Abstract

It has previously been shown that the stresses in beams in the region of circular holes without reinforcement can be satisfactorily obtained by either a theory of elasticity solution or a method in which parts of the beam near the hole are treated by curved beam theory. The appropriate method depends upon the ratio of hole diameter to beam depth and the shear-to-moment ratio. Design aids in the form of moment-shear interaction curves and based on the aforementioned theories are presented. These curves are given for hole diameter-to-beam depth ratios of 0.20 to 0.75, and for eccentricities of the hole center line from the mid-depth of the beam up to 0.25 of the beam depth.
