Vogt Boundary for Finite Element Arch Dam Analysis

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 100, Issue 1

Abstract

The Vogt theory for boundary deformations of arch dams is recast in finite element terms. The derivation of boundary stiffness coefficients from the Vogt parameters for direct application to three-dimensional finite element analysis is presented. The formulation neither increases the number of degrees-of-freedom above that required for the dam structure, nor creates any additional nonzero coefficients within the assembled structural matrix.
