Nonlinear Discrete Element Analysis of Frames

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 99, Issue 10

Abstract

A discrete element model of plane frame members is presented that can represent the nonlinear behavior of plane frame members. Nonlinear stress-strain curves, nonlinear soil support characteristics, and the nonlinearities associated with the change in geometry of the structure under load are handled simultaneously in the discrete element model. The tangent stiffness method is used in developing an iterative solution for the displacements of the frame joints. The solution has been programmed and is capable of solving a wide variety of practical problems such as large plane frame supported on piles driven into a highly nonlinear soil and subjected to complex loading conditions that cause large displacements, nonlinear stress-strain response, and nonlinear soil structure interaction.
