Behavior and Design of Shingle Joints

Abstract

Seven shingle joints of A572 steel were fastened with 7/8-inc. (22.3-mm) A325 bolts; the remaining 2 joints were fastened with 7/8-in. (22.3-mm) Huckbolts. The variables covered in this investigation were the An/As ratio, the total number of fasteners in the joint, the number of fasteners per region and the number of regions. The average shear strength of shingle joints was shown to decrease with joint length which is similar to butt joints. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental results indicated that the theoretical predictions are reliable for the load-deformation behavior, the ultimate strength, as well as the distribution of load in the main and combined lap plates of shingle joints. Various design methods approximating the distribution of load in the joint elements are compared with the experimental load partitions at the working load level. For design a modification of existing methods is proposed.
