Abstract
The results of experimental and analytical studies on the characteristics of concrete reinforced with uniformly distributed short wire pieces are presented. The experimental program includes tests on workability, modulus of rupture strength, and compressive strength of 75 batches of concrete; the major variables are water-cement ratio, percentage of steel, and gage and length of wire pieces. Despite the slight loss of workability, preparation of good wire reinforced concrete is quite feasible. Effective wire spacing has been formulated taking into consideration the bond deficiency and probable orientation of the wire pieces both within the interior concrete and near the exterior faces of the specimen. Based on experimental results, a correlation has been obtained between effective wire spacing and tensile strength ratio.
