Shear Lag Analysis of Rectangular Full-Width Tube Junctions
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 98, Issue 1
Abstract
A shear lag analysis is suggested for analytically determining the joint stiffness of welded junctions between rectangular hollow tubes. A complete stress analysis of typical connections is given along with numerical values of joint stiffness for practically all possible full-width connections of sizes covered in the 1967 AISC Manual. Results are veerified by experiments as wel as by a three-dimensional finite element solution. Semiempirical equations are suggested for ready evaluation of joint stiffness of such joints. It is shown that in most practical situations these joints will behave as AISC type I ocnnections. Curves showing special behavior of these joints in load transfer from the branches to main member have been given. Possible [3∼dified
