World's Largest Log-Periodic Antenna

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 97, Issue 9

Abstract

Detailed descriptions of the structural system, design criteria, fabrication of the antenna elements, fiberglass road assemblies, asbestos-cement pressure pipe towers and epoxy joints are presented. The antenna's critical, electrical requirements imposed on the structural support system dictate that the support system must basically be nonmetal. This criterion was successfully fulfilled by the use of asbestos-cement pressure pipe towers and fiberglass rods as tower guys and suspension members. This coupled with the development of a unique procedure for the assembling and erection of the long antenna by working at or near ground level and then lifting it into place, made it feasible to bring the antenna into realization. Included are descriptions of material testings, quality controls, and method of antenna erection.
