Abstract
It should be mandatory that bridge engineers consider esthetics since there is so much emphasis being placed upon the effect of construction on the environment. Factors to be considered in the esthetic design of short span bridges are: slenderness; lack of mass, continuity of lines, simplicity of details, similarity of materials and compatibility with environment. Each of these factors is presented and photographs are used to illustrate them.
