Abstract
A constraint is defined as an application of a design criterion at a specific location for a specific loading condition. Computer aids for constraint evaluation have been difficult to implement because various and involved logical procedures are required to build from input data to constraint values. A network-topological description of data relationships from input through derived attributes to constraint values is generalized to treat subscripted attributes. A SEEK procedure provides a simple and efficient algorithm for evaluation of any constraint or attribute. A WARN procedure indicates effects of design changes on the validity of previously derived data. These procedures appear appropriate for use of any specification with computer-aided design procedures such as review, sensitivity analysis, and modification, as well as their synthesis in formal optimization.
