Abstract
Results are presented for an analytical study of the effect of creep and shrinkage on the behavior and ultimate capacity of long rectangular prestressed concrete columns with hinged ends. The effects of concrete strength, steel percentage, slenderness ratio, eccentricity and partial prestressing were considered. The results indicate that long eccentrically loaded columns can be significantly increased by sustained loading. In addition the prestressing force in the column may be reduced appreciably under sustained loading.
