Interaction of Aircraft and Ground Structure
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 96, Issue 6
Abstract
The interaction of taxiing aircraft and ground structure consists of three levels of forced vibration. In the first level the aircraft rolls on a smooth surface. The vibration of the aircraft is the source of excitation and the ground structure responds. The second level of forced vibration is the excitation due to surface roughness. The aircraft, in this case, is the responding system. The dynamic increment of the aircraft causes the third level of vibration; that is, the ground structure is again responding to the increment of aircraft load. The problem has been treated theoretically and experimentally. Three dynamic increment factors have been introduced for deflection, moment, and shear of the ground structure. Although the analytical method given herein tends to imply that the ground structure is a framed system, the principle of the analysis should be applicable to airport pavements.
