Abstract
The representation of a three dimensional rigid-jointed steel structure by a number of two dimensional frames may not lead to an adequate description of its behavior. The action of the whole structure may be synthesized from the analyses of each member under the action of its axial force, biaxial moments, and torques, provided proper account is taken of the end restraints induced by the interaction between the adjacent structural members. The elastic analysis of the axial compression and biaxial bending of an elastically restrained thin-walled open section member is given, and this is used to study the stability and deformations of and the stresses in a number of eccentrically loaded end-restrained single angle struts for which experimental data are available. It is concluded that the theoretical loads at which the struts first yield are close to and less than the experimental failure loads.
