Abstract
Field tests of a lightweight aluminum bridge deck of orthotopic construction provided stresses and deflections in the deck plate and ribs caused by a truck loaded to 20 tons. A typical panel, shop fabricated complete with a 3/8-in. thick polyester resin-silica sand wear surface, was instrumented with electrical resistance strain gages and dial gages. Stresses and deflections were determined for 18 different positions of the truck on the panel. Stresses caused by the moving truck were evaluated for truck speeds up to about 20 mph. The test data for static loadings are compared to values calculated using available design methods.
