Abstract
Lumped parameter models, consisting of rigid bars and extensional and rotational springs, are used to study the stability of structural members. The linear as well as the nonlinear, post-buckling behavior of columns, frames, plates and shells is simulated by means of one and two degree of freedom models. The mathematical simplification resulting from the use of the models makes it possible to explain complex stability phenomenons such as snap-through buckling in shells and the presence of primary bending in frames in simple terms.
