Abstract
The effects of strip and checkerboard loading patterns on the moments in multipanel reinforced concrete floor slabs are evaluated using analytical and experimental information. Moments measured under pattern loading are compared with uniform-load values for a flat plate, two flat slabs and two two-way slabs. The results of theoretical solutions for pattern loads on elastic plates are used to develop a procedure for estimating the effect of pattern loadings on moments in multipanel slabs supported by beams or columns of any stiffness. The procedure consists of determining whether the given combinations of beam and column stiffnesses are sufficient to limit moment increases to a prescribed level. Results from the moments measured in the test structures indicate that the effects of pattern loads on actual structures can be predicted using the suggested procedure.
