Abstract
The state-of-the-art of steel box girder design and construction is reviewed. It is shown from a list of 50 recently constructed bridges that the use of the steel box girder configuration is increasing because of aesthetic reasons. The particular design features are enumerated, research needs are classified, and current research work is listed. The cited references concentrate primarily on the German literature. The principal need was shown to be the collection and classification of the available material on design and the need for more general economic studies.
