Synthesis of A Space Truss Based on Dynamic Criteria

Abstract
The development of a computer program for the automated design of hyperstatic truss structures subject to alternative resonant frequency requirements is described. The program is based on extending the full-stressed design concept to include resonant frequency requirements. The procedure involves an iterative process of analysis and automated redesign to select optimum member sizes. The use of the program in the design of hyperstatic truss structures for a current space program is described. Rapid convergence of the process is experienced. Graphical results are presented depicting the behavior of various structural parameters during the design process. Computer times of 5 min per design are typical. The program was used repeatedly to investigate alternative truss configurations and design restraints. This experience demonstrates the practicality of using the fully-stressed process for the automated design of truss structures.
