Abstract
In the design of subway structures for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System, two different approaches to computer usage have been followed. STRESS, and a new program FRAME, developed by the San Francisco project, were both used. The circumstances leading to the development of FRAME and the features and capabilities of both programs in use in the design of subway structures are outlined for use in judging the comparative merits and appropriateness of a problem-oriented computer language system and a special purpose computer program.
