Abstract
A514 high-yield-strength quenched and tempered alloy steels offer a yield strength of 100,000 psi at more favorable price-to-strength ratios than most lower strength steels. However, for effective use of the full potential of A514 steels, designers require an extensive knowledge of their structural behavior. Investigations were conducted to determine the fatigue strength of A514 steel plates and welded joints. These data provide guidance for the design of welded structures subjected to repetitive loading. Because in critical applications structural components may be subjected to rapid strain rates, tests were conducted to determine the effect of strain rate on the tensile properties of A514 steels. The effect of elevated temperature on the mechanical properties was also determined. A comparison is made of the behavior of A514 steel with that of lower strength steels.
