Stress Analysis of Cantilevered Bridge Slabs

Abstract

An approximate method is presented for the direct stress analysis of orthotropic cantilevered bridge slabs. The moments and shear forces in the slab are expressed in the form of Fourier series in the transverse co-ordinate, the coefficients of the series being functions of the spanwise position only. The series are chosen initially to satisfy both the equilibrium and boundary conditions for the slab, enabling the stress-resultants to be expressed in terms of chosen functional coefficients, which may subsequently be determined by minimization of the strain energy by the calculus of variations. The problem reduces to the solution of a set of linear differential equations with a complete set of boundary conditions. A single solution is obtained for the entire slab, the discontinuity at the intermediate support being incorporated by an artifice similar to Macaulay's method in beam theory.
