Abstract

The Haystack Antenna is a fully steerable parabolic antenna 120 ft in diameter. The surface of this antenna must remain within ± 0.075 in. of a true paraboloid. A summary is presented of the analysis and design effort of the antenna, and its design verification by actual tests. An attempt is made to show the current (1965) capability of computer programs in the field of structural analysis. The antenna is a space frame and thin shell structure, which was analyzed as a framed structure of 840 joints and 2,700 members.
