Abstract

The analysis of space truss structures by the method of plate analogy is presented. By this procedure the three-dimensional problem is reduced to a series of coplanar problems. The presentation is directly applicable to those space trusses formed in the general shape of folded-plates and shells of single or double curvature. The structure may be statically determinate or indeterminate, internally or externally, depending on the arrangement of bars and support conditions. Calculation of redundants is handled by the same general philosophy as for coplanar trusses. The presence of internal redundants does not alter the procedure for calculation of edge forces; also, internal panel redundants do not produce any edge forces. The plate elements must be stable and capable of resisting forces in their own planes. The common assumptions of truss analysis are made; secondary effects are not discussed. A numerical example is worked to demonstrate the procedure of application.
