Constant Shear Moment Distribution

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 89, Issue 6

Abstract

A method of moment distribution analysis of multi-story frames subject to sidesway is presented. Modified stiffness and carryover factors are derived that are used in the same manner that ordinary stiffness and carryover factors are used in the Hardy Cross moment distribution process. Consequently, the shear equations are automatically satisfied. In addition to the usual requirements of the frame to be adaptable to analysis by the moment distribution method, the frame must be composed of stories, and each story must have either any number of parallel legs or two non-parallel legs. The method can save a great deal of time in the analysis of certain frames. The time savings increase as the ratio of the number of shear equations to the number of moment equations. The method is suited to multi-story, trapezoidal frames. Equations for determining fixed-end moments due to sidesway are included. Matrix algebra is used.
