Analysis of Large Movable Structures

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 89, Issue 4

Abstract

Matrix algebra is applied, through electronic computations, to structural analysis. Techniques developed in connection with the design of the 600-ft radio telescope at Sugar Grove, West Virginia, are presented, and used as illustrative examples. Primary emphasis is placed on such practical problems as input error control, design flexibility permitting changes without complete re-runs, choice of re-dundants to maintain accuracy, minimizing computer time, dividing and reassembling the structure to conform with computer capacities, and choice of stiffness or flexibility approaches. All methods and examples are those that have actually been used in the design. The reason for their selection and experiences with their use are included.
