Optimal Design of Small Reservoir Systems
Publication: Journal of the Irrigation and Drainage Division
Volume 108, Issue 4
Abstract
Tanks, small reservoirs to catch rain during monsoon seasons, are traditional water harvesting methods in India. Though major investment is being planned for more tank construction, no one has investigated the optimal tank design, size, and placement. This paper combines the tools of systems analysis with tank methodology to design optimal systems thereby saving considerable construction costs and improving water use efficiency. Problems of semi-arid tropics are examined. Traditional tank construction is also covered. The optimization problems in designing a tank system and covered in this paper are volume, location, and tank dimensions.
