Abstract
Design system capacities were developed for center pivot sprinklers irrigating corn in the Central Great Plains by simulating irrigations for 60 yr of climatic data collected at Akron, CO. The modified Penman equation for estimating potential ET for alfalfa as a reference crop was calibrated with lysimeter and meteorological data collected at the University of Nebraska, Scottsbluff Station. The Akron, Colo., data were adjusted to represent an irrigated environment by correlating with data collected at a weather station between three center pivot sprinkler systems. The design system capacities developed from the simulation model allow for the depletion of available soil water. An empirical procedure for determining the net system capacity for ETnet as affected by allowable depletion levels is presented in Table 3.
