Simulation of Water Yield from Devegetated Basins

Publication: Journal of the Irrigation and Drainage Division
Volume 97, Issue 2

Abstract

The application of mathematical models for watershed simulation is considered with specific reference to studying the effects of vegetation management on water yields. Examples are presented herein where the effects of wild forest fires on water yield are demonstrated quantitatively for the Sisquoc and Santa Ynez Rivers in California. The results of this study were then extended to determine the long term effect of planned vegetation management on both watersheds for the complete period of streamflow record. The results are presented and show conclusively that the removal of vegetation for a watershed increases the water yield.
