Abstract
A review of progress made by rice farmers in Louisiana and Texas in the use of techniques for water management on ricelands is presented. The techniques examined are the result of applied research and experience. Progress in irrigation and drainage system layout and construction to meet operational needs is examined and illustrated. This includes land forming and location of water control structures based on site conditions including topography, soils, cultural practices, drainage outlet conditions, and irrigation water supply. Details concerning design, layout, and construction with complete bibliographic references are omitted in deference to emphasis on the recent progress of local application of water management techniques.
