Abstract
A number of water balance models are available that use climatological data. Several research workers have used models of this type for irrigation planning. It is shown that this method, which, in effect, synthesizes an irrigation program for the entire period of climatological record, is a powerful tool for predicting irrigation requirements and the economic feasibility of supplemental irrigation. Irrigation requirements are often stated in terms of the probability that not more than a certain quantity will be required in a given year. A procedure is considered by which a confidence level may be assigned to such a statement. Figures and tables are provided to enable a research worker to compute the minimum size of sample required so that a probability statement can be made with a specified confidence coefficient.
