Beaver Valley Containment Structure

Publication: Journal of the Power Division
Volume 99, Issue 1

Abstract

Unusual design concepts as well as more formalized approaches are required in the design of a containment structure. Governing loading conditions must be recognized and criteria established for delineating maximum loads. Design loads for both external loading and internal loading caused by seismic and pipe break conditions requires careful analysis to provide maximum design criteria. The large forces existing in the mat shell and dome are investigated and solutions obtained which are both economical and practical. The liner and penetrations through the shell are analyzed to provide compatibility with the rest of the structure. Materials such as concrete and reinforcing steel must be carefully reviewed for maximum utilization and control. Construction features form an integral part in the development and design of the structure. A proof test is used to establish the structural integrity of the structure.
