Disposal and Uses of Power Plant Ash in Urban Area

Publication: Journal of the Power Division
Volume 99, Issue 1

Abstract

Increased coal fired generating capacity results in higher ash production. This is compounded by the increased ash content and lower Btu value of coal, and the installation of high efficiency electrostatic precipitators which remove 99% of all fly ash from flue gases. The chemical composition, Wisconsin gravity, grain size distribution, compaction characteristics, and field density tests of Wisconsin Electric Power Company ashes are described. Landfill applications include construction of berms for a rifle range and filling on property to be used for commercial development which is made possible by proper compaction of the fly ash. Utilization of fly ash includes fly ash concrete. Other uses of fly ash are for possolanic base coarse material, asphalt filler material, and sewage plant sludge dewatering.
