Chesapeake Bay Model Study for Calvert Cliffs

Abstract

A hydraulic model study was conducted to study the warm water effluent from the proposed nuclear power plant at Calvert Cliffs on Chesapeake Bay. The intake structure and discharge structure configurations were developed in part through the model study. Basically, a deep water intake and a subsurface jet discharge was the result of all studies. Results of the studies were displayed as a series of plots showing plan view isotherms at several depths including the water surface. Plots of temperatures on various vertical sections were also presented to indicate the depth distribution of temperature. The maximum observed surface temperature was a 4°F increase outside of a small local area near the plant outlet, while differential temperatures of less than 0.5°F were observed at considerable distance from the plant site.
