Reinforcing Steel for Penstock Wye Branches
Abstract
To avoid using heavy ring girders with welding problems, a reinforcing steel solution was developed for the Blakely Mountain penstock wye and surge tank riser. This solution was practical because the large surge tank required a mass concrete base which would encase the wye and riser. Cages of 2-in. sq, undeformed, reinforcing bars were embedded in the mass concrete to resist the discontinuity forces of the wye and surge tank riser. The cages were placed without difficulty and the Project put into operation in 1955. No structural cracking of the base has been reported.
