Cost and Economics of Maintenance of Turbine Runner Cavitation
Abstract
Five, single unit, 20,000-kw hydroelectric power plants, built with turbine settings as specified by the manufacturer have runner cavitation or pitting repair problems in a short time when operated as peak load plants. The methods, procedures, materials, timing, and cost of in-place welding repairs are described and given for the initial maintenance up-keep of all plants. Cost records and an analysis of peak capacity operation show that the value of extra power far exceeds the increased cost of runner maintenance.
