Abstract

Hydraulic investigations of the trifurcation of a 23-ft diameter penstock are presented. The trifurcation that directs flow to three Francis turbines having a combined power capacity of 247,050 kw with 12,000 cfs discharging may, on rare occurrences, pass to 18,000 cfs. In the main penstock the Reynold's number is approximately 9 × 107 maximum, with normal operating ranges as high as 6 × 107. Recommendations concerning design and operation, based on this study, are made. The studies include energy losses, pressures (static and dynamic), and expected shed vorticity from a central tie-bar.
