Abstract

Engineering considerations and design criteria for the 7-1/2 mile long hydroelectric power tunnel for the Mammoth Pool Hydroelectric Project on the San Joaquin River in California are examined. The performance record of the unlined pressure tunnel, placed in igneous and metamorphic rocks is reviewed. In addition to remedial repairs, design details, and the general philosophy of design are considered. Hydraulic, structural and economic aspects are described. Actual contract costs are presented together with contract and specification provisions used to control the construction work.
