2023 Journal of Management in Engineering End-of-Year Review

Publication: Journal of Management in Engineering
Volume 40, Issue 4
The Journal of Management in Engineering (JME) is 40 years old! JME started in 1985, and initially published a collection of short papers from practitioners in the engineering management field to discuss the importance of managerial issues in the engineering and construction industry. As we celebrate JME’s 40th anniversary, JME is a premier academic journal in the project engineering and construction management field for disseminating the best academic work that contributes to the body of knowledge.
To commemorate this important milestone, I recently reached out to the former chief editors of JME to send a short notes and memories. Below are the remarks from some of the former editors in chief.
Dr. John Farr:
I was the editor of JME from 2000 to 2001. You become a journal editor for many reasons to include giving back to your profession and because you enjoy reading relevant research. As the editor, you must skim every paper that is submitted for suitability to be published and then assign the right reviewers. Those papers that pique your interest you will then take the time to read. Though reading good research is enjoyable, the most gratifying aspect of being an editor is cultivating relationships. You must cultivate and expand your professional network to find reviewers.
In writing this piece, I went back to my files and found a spreadsheet with a list of reviewers from 2000. Twenty-three years later as I scanned the list, I realized that many of these I can still call friends or at least professional acquaintances. Back then, JME was a group of dedicated civil engineers who believed that management was a key to the future of the profession. Globalization, the Internet of Things, digital economy, and technology have further validated the need for the products provided by JME to the engineering profession and society. Happy 40th anniversary!
Dr. Irtishad Ahmad:
It is hard to imagine now! Forty years ago, I was a young student just beginning my doctoral program at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. My major professor, mentor, and friend, Professor Sam Minkarah (now deceased) introduced me to Mel Hensey (also since deceased), a civil engineer and management consultant in Cincinnati. He was also the inaugural editor of the newly launched ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering. Mel recruited me as a reviewer for his journal immediately. Subsequently, Professor Minkarah and I authored a few articles in the journal stemming from my graduate research.
I remain involved and committed to the mission of the journal to this day. The journal played an integral role in promoting and establishing management as an essential part of the profession of engineering. Obviously, the journal evolved and went through needed transformations in its aims and scope over the years due to advances in management theories and practices and in the field of information technology. I believe the Journal of Management in Engineering is truly a one-of-a-kind, nontraditional, and multidisciplinary publication avenue for authors that dare to push the envelope in engineering education, research, and practice. I am fortunate to have been a part of this journey along with my mentors, colleagues, and friends.
I congratulate the current editor in chief, Professor Young Hoon Kwak, and his team for elevating the Journal of Management in Engineering to one of the top ASCE journals. I wish him, along with his editorial team members, continued success in the years to come!
Dr. Makarand Hastak:
It was an honor to lead the Journal of Management in Engineering from January 2009 to December 2015 as the editor in chief. It was a small yet very effective editorial board. While the submission of papers to JME progressively increased during this time frame, we were constantly chipping at the response time, gradually cutting it down. At the same time, our impact factor also steadily increased. As a result, in agreement with the ASCE journals publication team, we decided to increase the frequency of the journal from quarterly to bimonthly.
The journal was established with an intent to attract papers from academia as well as industry that would reflect on all aspects of management in the field of civil engineering. In the spirit of this founding principle, our editorial board members would reach out to industry practitioners encouraging them to author or coauthor forum papers for the journal. In addition, during my tenure, a number of special issues were introduced on contemporary topics that were well subscribed by authors from around the world, further increasing the popularity of the journal. In response to the wide range of paper submissions, we revised the JME classification codes to include 10 categories (instead of six), with several subcategories that covered major areas of research, and requested the authors to identify the classification code for their papers to facilitate the review process.
Over the years, the journal has made much progress achieving a commendable impact factor. On the 40th anniversary of the journal, I wish continued success to the present editorial board to achieve greater heights and accolades for the Journal of Management in Engineering while maintaining its high standards.
JME continues to pursue excellence advancing the latest managerial principles in engineering management by publishing a wide range of topics, inviting passionate and dedicated editorial board members, and running special collections that are contemporary and novel. I would like to summarize JME’s 2023 progress and achievements and address what is ahead in the future.

New JME Associate Editor

As JME continues to receive diverse topics of managerial issues in the engineering and construction sector, there is a need to better match the papers with the authorities in the field for manuscript processing, reviewing, and rendering decisions. In 2023, I added three additional associate editors who have research interests in workplace health, safety, and well-being; infrastructure sustainability and postdisaster resiliency; and project finance and sustainable infrastructure development. By adding new associate editors, I expect that the current workload of associate editors will be relieved, and as a result, they will provide more thorough assessment and recommendations. I look forward to working with new associate editors, who will serve as gatekeepers of our journal. Please welcome them.
Clara Cheung, University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
Juyeong Choi, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
José Guevara, University of Los Andes, Colombia.

JME New Editorial Board Members

In 2023, JME added one new editorial board member, Yan Wang from the University of Florida. Her area of research interest is built environment resilience to both hazard and disruptive technologies. She was also the recipient of 2021 JME Honorable Mention Award. I look forward to working with her.

JME Impact Factor and Statistics

I am pleased to announce that JME’s 2022 impact factor compiled by Clarivate Analytics was 7.4 with a 5-year impact factor of 7.4. In terms of area ranking by impact factor, JME was 17 out of 179 (Quartile 1) in civil engineering and 11 out of 68 (Quartile 1) in industrial engineering in 2022. JME continues to receive the highest impact factor among all journals published by ASCE. This achievement is a result of a collective effort of associate editors, editorial board members, ASCE Journals staff, as well as scholars and peers in our field who have reviewed, published, and cited JME papers. In 2023, JME received 668 papers and published six issues with 74 papers. The ASCE Journals Department reported that the review time, on average, from initial submission to first decision was 47 days and submission to final decision was 172 days.

JME Best Paper Award

Each year, JME selects the best paper to recognize and promote outstanding contributions to the body of knowledge in management in engineering. The best paper selection committee (chaired by Nader Naderpajough in 2023) considered all the papers published from July 2022 to May 2023 and selected one best paper and one honorable mention paper. The Best Paper Award of 2023 went to Paul Hickey, Abdolmajid Erfani, and Qingbin Cui, “Use of LinkedIn Data and Machine Learning to Analyze Gender Differences in Construction Career Paths,” https://doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0001087. The Honorable Mention Award went to Ying-Yi Chih and Cody Yu-Ling Hsiao, “Brace for Another Crisis: Empirical Evidence from US Construction Industry and Firm Performance during and after 2007–2009 Global Financial Crisis,” https://doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0001102. Please congratulate the recipients of the Best Paper and Honorable Mention Awards.

JME Decade Award (New)

In 2024, JME will establish a new award, called the JME Decade Award, that recognizes the impact of scholarly work a decade after its first publication. Discussions around the establishment of this award have raised interesting questions as to what scholarly impact is and how it can be evaluated. This will be an ongoing and dynamic discussion to critically review the frameworks and metrics that are used to judge scholarly impacts and what they mean for the future of scientific inquiry. Although metrics are commonly used to assess the impact of scholarly work, there are increasing discussions that the depth of engaged scholarship should be beyond metrics and should address both theoretical and practical contributions. The JME executive editorial board believes that this award will provide an opportunity to engage in this evolving discussion.

JME Special Collections

JME uses special collections to raise and expand important and emerging topics that would appeal to a broad audience and engage in debate in our discipline. Currently, we have three special collections that are ongoing:
