Frictional Slip in Elasticity: An Example
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 108, Issue 2
Abstract
In order to study various aspects of propagating slip zones with friction, the unbounded solid with a semi-infinite cut are considered. The solid is first compressed in a direction normal to the cut and subsequently subjected to a concentrated force, which is also normal to the cut and applied at its tip. The concentrated force, which varies with time, induces slip zones. The problem can be solved in closed form, and consequently it is possible to follow not only loading but also unloading, reloading and periodically fluctuating loads.
