Mapping and Predicting Soil Properties: Applications
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 107, Issue 5
Abstract
In this second part on the mapping and predicting of soil properties, several applications of the analytical model of the first part are shown with respect to the St. Jean Vianney case study. The undrained shear strength su of the sensitive clay deposit, which was involved in a major landslide, is mapped using the results of extensive geotechnical investigations. Four sets of measurements of su were used corresponding to field vane, laboratory vane, unconfined compression on borehole samples, and unconfined compression on undisturbed block samples recovered from the site. Four mapping combinations were chosen for analysis depending on what is considered biased or unbiased data. The basic parameters decribing su are determined in each case according to the analytical model of the first part.
