Reflection and Refraction at Subsonic Velocities
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 106, Issue 4
Abstract
The reflection and refraction of elastic waves involving cavitation at a fluid-solid boundary is analysed for subsonic speeds of the bubbles. It is found that unlike the supersonic case, in the subsonic range, a bounded solution is not possible. Thus singularities are allowed, and a unique solution to the unilateral problem is obtained by restricting the singularities only at the trailing edges of the bubbles. The solution thus obtained blends more gradually with the supersonic solution, at critical angle of incidence.
