Flow of Dilute Polymers Through Porous Media

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 106, Issue 3

Abstract

The flow of dilute polymer solutions through porous media is investigated experimentally. Large increases in flow resistance are noted, considerably higher than would be expected from Newtonian theory. This phenomenon is examined in terms of the viscoelastic properties of the polymer solutions. It is shown that the pressure gradient decreases along the porous medium due to degradation of the polymer. The degradation is shown to increase with increased strain rate. The onset of viscoelastic effects and the maximum increase in resistance are examined in terms of a previously developed model, and are shown to be reasonably consistent.
