Contact Problems for Solids Containing Cavities
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 104, Issue 6
Abstract
An integral transform solution is presented to treat the non-axisymmetric indentation problem of a punch in contact with a semi-infinite solid containing a stress-free cylindrical cavity. The analysis leads to Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. For the illustrative example of a flat-ended punch, the integral equation is solved and numerical results of the contact stress, the shape of the deformed boundary of the solid, and the radial displacement along the cavity surface are obtained.
