The Poisson Effect in a Column with Axial Strain
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 104, Issue 3
Abstract
The writer's previous work on buckling and post-buckling of a column with axial strain is generalized by allowing the cross sections along the member to change size and shape during the deformation due to the Poisson effect. Only a rectangular cross section is considered, but any prescribed taper is permissible. Graphs are presented for a simple, prismatic column which show how the axial and transverse displacements vary with load for some combinations of compressibility parameter and Poisson's ratio.
