Abstract
Cylindrical cantilever orthotropic shells are analyzed when subjected to wind loading or eccentric discharge of the stored solids, or both. The analysis is based on a rigorous system of governing equations. The encountered characteristic equation is of the eighth order. Expressions are obtained in closed form for the displacements from which the internal force components are calculated. The results of the analysis are compared to those obtained by adopting a simplified system of governing equations. Limits are established for the validity of the approximate solution and the factors controlling it. Experimentally obtained results show reasonable agreement with the theoretically obtained ones. For practical use, curves are given for the calculation of the force and displacement components at the critical locations of the shell.
